Does Haven for Special People develop or construct apartment buildings?No, Haven for Special People does not build or develop buildings. We are a non-profit organization which aspires to create an inclusive community where all residents, disabled and able-bodied, form neighborly connections. We have partnered with community development experts, Couleecap and Gerrard Corporation to bring this vision to reality.

How can I become involved as a volunteer?We would love to have you join us as a volunteer. Please fill out our contact page and we will contact you as volunteer opportunities arise.

How do I donate?We are currently accepting donations through our fiscal sponsor, Couleecap. Make check payable to: CouleeCap Inc. (put "Haven for Special People" in memo line. Mailed to: Couleecap, Inc., Attn: Haven for Special People, 201 Melby Street, Westby, WI 54667.

How is the project funded?Through the support of WHEDA, La Crosse Community Foundation, Our Shelter Friends Foundation, La Crosse County, and individual pledges of support we are well on our way to funding this project. We still need your support! Please click here to donate!

When donating through the site, how is the donation money used?Funds are needed to fill the gap in funding for building construction as well as for the operational and programming expenses of Haven for Special People through an endowment. Designations you place on your funds will be applied accordingly. Undesignated funds will be used for one of the above purposes at the discretion of Couleecap and the Haven for Special People board.

What types of units will be in Haven on Main?Haven on Main will have 1-2-& 3- bedroom apartments, about half of which will be designed for people with a disability.

How is a Haven for Special People supported community different from other apartment buildings?While many apartment buildings claim to create community, it is largely up to the residents to create a feeling of community happen. Haven for Special People is committed to providing events such as musical guests, life skill classes, holiday parties, game nights, neighborhood meetings, and other activities to foster a sense of community among the residents.

What are the emergency and security features?Haven on Main will meet all required emergency measures per city code. Security features will include keyless secured entry to the residential floors and main level, exterior blue light security cameras, and gated keyless entry outdoor space.

What are the accessibility features?Half of the apartments will be designed for residents with a disability. A full list of features is yet to be determined.

What type of parking is available?Haven on Main will have under-building and surface level parking spaces available.

What transportation options are nearby?Haven on Main is conveniently located within one block of a La Crosse MTU bus stop for several routes. Other privately arranged transportation companies will be able to pick up and drop off residents under the covered portico.

How do I reserve a special event room?This will be determined at a later date.

What amenities are nearby?Groceries and dining options are within a 10 minute walking distance. WTC, Viterbo and UWL campuses are a 7-20 minute walk. La Crosse MTU bus stops for several routes are available within one block of the building entrance.

How is Haven on Main different from group homes, assisted living, or institutions?Haven on Main will be a community of many different types of people, similar to living on a neighborhood street. Haven for Special People encourages and nurtures the creation of community by hosting and coordinating interesting events which bring people together, fostering independence and recognition of each resident’s gifts. There are no personal health or transportation services coordinated by Haven on Main or Haven for Special People.

What financial assistance is available?Haven on Main will have market rate and income based units.

Will there be staff on-site and what assistance can they provide?Staff from the property management company will handle all site related concerns/issues, including maintenance and janitorial needs. They will be on-site only to address those types of needs. Haven for Special People part-time staff and volunteers will plan and facilitate social events, programs, educational opportunities, and tours.

What support is available?Personal support, such as support to assist with daily living activities, will need to be contracted independently by each resident’s family or caregiver. Building support and maintenance will be provided through the management company.

Are pets allowed?Haven on Main’s pet policy will be determined at a future date.

Is smoking allowed?Haven on Main and its grounds will be non-smoking.

How does one apply to become a resident?All resident applications (not yet available) will be considered by the property management company.

Who qualifies to live at Haven on Main?Haven on Main welcomes all potential residents, including those with or without a disability, seniors, families, single parents, professionals, married couples, etc.

How much is rent?Haven on Main will have market rate and income based units. Exact pricing is yet to be determined.

What is included in the rent payment?Rent will include all utilities, internet service and access to all shared community spaces. More details and additional fees are yet to be determined.
